Maternal health is the cornerstone of early childhood development, which begins at conception. Families and communities must prioritize the care of pregnant women through early antenatal consultations, adequate nutrition, prevention of gender-based violence, and protection of their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Globally there has been progress in reduction of maternal deaths from 339/100000 deaths to 227/100000 deaths from 2000 to 2015 respectively. Despite the marked decline, progress has been minimal from 2015 to 2020, where the maternal mortality rate is 227/100000 live births. What can be done?
Diabetes has been responsible for at least $966 billion in health expenditure in 2021 which is 9% of the global total spent on healthcare. There is a need for global action to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue.
